Waterbury Res Sunset Paddle

With Memorial Day this weekend, Umiak Outdoor Outfitters is preparing to kick off a great summer season. The rivers are holding their water even with the lack of normal rain in April and May. Most of the staff are returning from last year and starting to arrive home (VT) from their winter obligations.

WBR May 2014 Group

After work yesterday, several of the Umiak staff went out for a sunset paddle on Waterbury Reservoir to loosen up those muscles that had been dormant all winter.

Emma Porrett, received her Level 1 SUP ACA certification last summer and agreed to give some valuable pointers to the crew attempting the same course in mid-June.

The calm winds and beautiful backdrop made this first paddle a great start to the 2014 Summer season.

Vermont River Race in June!

Today I received great news that The Friends of the Winooski are organizing a river race on the Winooski River on Saturday June 7th (from Bolton-Richmond). In the spirit of collaboration, the Vermont River Conservancy is a co-sponsor along with Umiak Outdoor Outfitters. This event is geared toward generating enthusiasm for water-based recreation in the Winooski River watershed, and raising awareness about the efforts of the two organizations in the region. Proceeds from the race will support projects to improve public access and riparian land restoration in the watershed.

Registration is only $25 if you signup before May 31st.

Vermont SUP will be there sharing there love for the sport with fellow paddling junkies. For more info about the event and to sign up or help volunteer visit their website.

JJ & Erin at the end of their 4 mile paddle.

We’ve had our eyes on the rivers and lakes for weeks now. It’s been a long wait, but the rivers up here in northern Vermont are finally moving again! The last of the ice dams on the Winooski River have broken free and its time to paddle! With cold, high, fast moving water, large ice chunks and other debris floating in the river it’s not quite the season for beginner paddlers; but if you’ve got the right equipment and knowledge the fun can begin right now! Winooski River Trip – Sept 20th – 24th 2013

Last September several of us planned a trip to paddle the entire Winooski River. We paddled 65 miles in 5 days… details to come but in the meantime enjoy a few of our photos from the trip.
